Ted James will host the event, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 15 at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum. The center will highlight its progress in advocating for a healthier population and access to high-quality healthcare for all Louisiana citizens over the previous five years during the celebration.

BATON ROUGE (July 6, 2015) – The Louisiana Center for Health Equity (LCHE) has worked to address the increasing disparities in health and healthcare statewide for the past five years. To celebrate the progress and strides the organization has made, it will host its signature gala, Light Up the Night for a Brighter Future. Louisiana State. Rep. Ted James will host the celebration, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 15 at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum.

The Center, founded in 2010 by President Alma C. Stewart, works to address the increasing disparities in health and health care across the state. The organization also represents the interest of health equity by promoting the elimination of health disparities caused by poverty, lack of access to quality health care and unhealthy environmental conditions with a focus on wellness and community health.

“We are overjoyed to celebrate this momentous occasion,” Stewart said. “We will highlight our successes over the past five years, and we look forward to working with internal and external partners statewide to continue to do the good work of ensuring the citizens of our great state have equal access to high-quality healthcare, and healthful living.”

As a testament to the great capacity the organization has to galvanize people at the state and grassroots levels to advance opportunities for healthier people, communities, as well as favorable health conditions where people live, learn, work and play, LCHE was appointed during the most recent session to two statewide taskforces to study healthcare services and delivery systems.

LCHE will convene a study committee to evaluate and make recommendations concerning the state’s system of healthcare, and a task force to make recommendations related to health services delivery and financing in the Baton Rouge area. In addition, the organization will serve as a collaborator with several other organizations to establish baseline data on access to health care in Louisiana and make recommendations concerning health system reforms that emphasize prevention and wellness.

State Rep. James, who serves district 101, is a natural choice to host the celebration. He is an avid supporter of LCHE and its initiatives, and was appointed by Gov. Bobby Jindal to the Louisiana Commission on AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis C.

“I fully believe in the work being done by the Louisiana Center for Health Equity,” James said. “I am honored to be a part of their five-year celebration, and I look forward to partnering with the organization in the future to ensure healthcare equity for all Louisiana residents.”
