SIDNEY OUTLAW TO MAKE ATLANTA OPERA DEBUT AS “FIGARO”

The award-winning and internationally praised vocal powerhouse Sidney Outlaw is set to make his debut with the Atlanta Opera this week in the role of “Figaro” in The Barber of Seville. The production, which will be sung in Italian with projected English supertitles, will be staged April 26 and 29 as well as May 2 and May 4 at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performance Center.

Outlaw is a rising star in the opera world. In March, he took home the second-place honor in the Walter W. Naumburg International Competition and most recently performed the title role in the American Symphony Orchestra’s Moses. In May, Outlaw will cover the role of “Guglielmo” in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The baritone is also set to cover “Mahmoud” in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of the The Death of Klinghoffer.

Outlaw has performed in numerous of productions throughout his career. While Outlaw is familiar with The Barber of Seville, he is excited to bring new life into his character for Atlanta Opera audiences.

“The Barber is a new role for me, and it has been very exciting to add this new role to my repertoire,” said Outlaw, a native of Brevard, N.C. “I am looking forward to seeing how it grows and matures as I continue my journey.”

Outlaw wowed audiences in this season during his North Carolina Opera debut in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte as “Guglielmo.” He also showcased his immense vocal talent with renowned pianist Warren Jones in the Christ Chapel Recital Series at the Riverside Church in New York City and Mozart: Requiem and
Mendelssohn: Die erste Walpurgisnacht, both produced by the Oratorio Society of New York. In addition, he performed a solo in Ein deutsches Requiem with the Asheville Symphony Chorus in North Carolina. Most recently, he performed the bass solos in Handel’s Messiah with Musica Sacra NYC, which was produced by the Oratorio Society of New York.

Outlaw is also a winner of Concurso Internatcional de Canto Montserrat Caballe. His other awards include earning second place in the 2011 Gerda Lissner Foundation Awards, national semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, semi-finalist in the Francisco Vinas International Singing Competition, finalist in the Concour International Musical de Montreal and George London Foundation, and grand prize in the Florida Grand Opera/YPO Vocal Competition.

Outlaw earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also earned a master of vocal arts from The Julliard School.
