NASHVILLE (April 22, 2015) – Renaissance artist Kyna Kyles is on a mission to alter the American lexicon and ban the ‘N word’ with her explosive new single, “Die Ni**a.”

The Chicago native, who has experienced some critical success with previous musical and poetic efforts, The Kyna Kyles Project, One Word and Evolution, feels the hurtful word should be retired from the vocabulary of African Americans, as well as people of other races and ethnicities.

With lyrics such as, “Malcolm wasn’t no nigger, Martin wasn’t no nigger, Medgar wasn’t no nigger, Magic wasn’t no nigger, you ain’t no nigger, so die nigger … it’s time,” Kyles’ message is explicit – in both senses of the word.

The provocative lyrics and supporting imagery – the bold red background signifying the urgency of her message, coupled with bright yellow lips telling listeners to be cautious with their words and the faint Klansman in the background, representing a part of the word’s painful past – are all part of Kyles’ brazen move to illustrate the seriousness of the epithet and to encourage people to refrain from using it.

A poet at heart, Kyles said the bold lyrics came to her in the middle of the night while she slept in a hotel room in Minnesota. The message was so powerful and so persistent, it would not allow her to sleep, she said.

“I woke up in the middle of the night with the chorus and the entire first verse echoing in my mind, and immediately wrote it down,” Kyles said. “A week later, after I laid the demo, I watched the video of Mike Brown laying motionless on the ground; being referred to over and over by members of his community as the N word. I knew then that I would do everything I could to make sure this message was heard. I want to rebrand this word in a way that people are truly uncomfortable hearing it and using it.”

The single is available on iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. Learn more at kynakyles.com.

Kyles lives in Nashville. She is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University’s acclaimed Recording Industry Management program.
