BATON ROUGE—The BET Music Matters Tour featuring Marsha Ambrosius and Melanie Fiona is making a stop in Baton Rouge during its trek across the country. BET’s Music Matters Tour provides an intense exposure and access opportunity for the next generation of Superstars to fans. The tour stop in Baton Rouge will be showcased on Saturday, March 19 at The Varsity Theatre.
Marsha Ambrosius, a native of Liverpool, England, is perhaps best-known as the singing half of the duo Floetry. Their 2000 debut Floetic produced signature singles like “Say Yes” and “Getting Late” as well as four Grammy nods. Ambrosius began establishing herself as a songwriter and producer, creating “Butterflies” for the late Michael Jackson and other hits for artists such as Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx and Nas following the release of the group’s 2005 album, Flo’Ology. The songstress has been nominated for a total of six Grammys and has been honored by BMI as their Songwriter of the Year. Ambrosius is building upon her past successes with her J Records debut disc LATE NIGHTS & EARLY MORNINGS, which features the smash hit, “I Hope She Cheats on You (With a Basketball Player).”
Melanie Fiona, originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a Kanye West protégé. Born Melanie Hall, the singer developed a passion for music at an early age and was influenced by groups and artists such as the Ronettes and Whitney Houston. Though she has been active in the music industry since 2002, her first recorded release came with Reggae Gold 2008, in the form of the track “Somebody Come Get Me.” The track was instantly acclaimed as a highlight, as well as a fan favorite on the album, and it helped her get signed to Universal Motown. Fiona released her debut single, “Give It to Me Right,” which samples “Time of the Season” by the Zombies. The single reached the Top 20 on the Canadian Hot 100, in addition to charting on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. Her debut album, The Bridge, was released in the fall of 2009, and was a Top 25 album on the Canadian Album Chart. The album’s lead single also charted in the U.K. and Italy. Fiona was the opening act on Kanye West’s European tour in 2008—at a time when she hadn’t even released an album. Fans know her as the singer of the hit, “It Kills Me.”
Building upon the success of the campaign, and the success of the first Music Matters Tour that sold out in major cities such as New York and Los Angeles, BET Live will bring the second installment of the Music Matters Tour, this time, more R&B focused, to 22 cities across the nation, including Baton Rouge. The 2011 Music Matters Tour will be sponsored by Flav – the newest in flavored water beverages with national retail distribution as well as nationwide penetration throughout middle and high schools.
The March 19 event is promoted and produced locally by acclaimed event brand SOUL REFINED. SOUL REFINED is an event brand that aims to bring upscale entertainment opportunities to urban professionals in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and beyond.
