Sidney Outlaw Joins Metropolitan Opera Roster

Baritone Sidney Outlaw joins the Metropolitan Opera roster as an understudy in the role of Mamoud in John Adams’ “The Death of Klinghoffer.”

The Metropolitan Opera in New York will stage “Klinghoffer” for the first time in October in a co-production that was first seen at the English National Opera in 2012. The staging will be broadcast to cinemas in November as part of the Met’s Live in HD series. “Klinghoffer” will open at the Met on Oct. 20. David Robertson, music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, will conduct.

In addition to “Klinghoffer,” the Brevard, North Carolina will make his debut in spring of 2014 with the Atlanta Opera as “Figaro” in The Barber of Seville. A sought-after performer, Outlaw will also star as “Moses” with the American Symphony Orchestra’s Moses.

Outlaw wowed audiences in this season during his North Carolina Opera debut in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte as “Guglielmo,” a role his first played during his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also showcased his immense vocal talent in the Christ Chapel Recital Series and Mozart: Requiem and
 Mendelssohn: Die erste Walpurgisnacht, both produced by the Oratorio Society of New York. In addition, he performed a solo in Ein deutsches Requiem with the Asheville Symphony Chorus in North Carolina. Most recently, he performed a solo in Messiah at Carnegie Hall, which was produced by the Oratorio Society of New York.

Outlaw is a recent winner of Concurso Internatcional de Canto Montserrat Caballe. His other awards include earning second place in the 2011 Gerda Lissner Foundation Awards, national semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, semi-finalist in the Francisco Vinas International Singing Competition, and George London Foundation, and grand prize in the Florida Grand Opera/YPO Vocal Competition.

Sidney earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also earned a master of vocal arts from The Julliard School.

    SO EXCITED for Sidney. So incredibly well deserved. I remember the first time I ever heard his Tanzlied. I listened to it a million times and didn’t want to hear it sung any less brilliantly than that. I can’t wait to root for him in the audience at THE MET. Bravo Sidney, well done!!!
